Masai sensor collapsed, crumbling, disintegrating on MBT shoes

Disintegrating, crumbling Masai sensors

I'd like to show some photos of how useless the so-called 'Masai sensor' in MBT shoes become.  'Masai sensor' sounds very exciting.  We shall call it the 'sponge heel cushion' for the purposes of this blog.

Top view 1

Here is the topsole of the shoes.  They are in lovely condition.

This side view show that the rubber seal which covers the Masai Sensor has opened up at the top.

Holding it up against the light shows that over time the sponge heel cushion has completely disintegrated and fragmented away like dust.
Closer view.

We can see straight through it.

Is this a parody of Nike Air?

This is the other shoe.

The soles of these shoes are not worn, confirming that they have not been used much.

Attempt to repair

I have ordered air bubble heel lift insoles from e-Bay and will try and fit them in the gap.  This worked for a short period before slipping out.

Running shoes

I bought these MBT running shoes and they have not lasted well.

Next time I plan to buy Nike Structure 24.

  2. I've had this happen to 2 pair of MBT's. The oldest pair crumbled after 3 to 4 years with a lot of wear. The 2nd pair, however, disintegrated after 3 yrs but I didn't wear them much. The sole, which became almost detached from the shoe, looks new. I appealed the 1st pair to MBT with photos and all. All they would do is give me a 30% discount off the MSRP of shoes at their website. I'm in the process of contacting them about the 2nd pair.

  3. Has anyone had their MBT soles repaired. I watched a youtube video of someone repairing his. I don't know who does this but I'd be willing to give it a try. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Mgf4x5PiYY

  5. I have had them crumble on first time wear when the shoes were old store stock. The chemical.from which the soles are made has a lifespan of about 3 years ...worn or not worn. The new model mbts with the Eva white soles like the Speed models don't do this. Only the soft soles as pictured here

  6. I have 2 pairs which did the exact same thing, ie, the sloes disintegrate after a year. Quite unacceptable, in my opinion, for shoes costing USD200 a pair.

  8. Has anyone tried repairing the heel and if so - what did you do and how did it work out?

    1. I tried squeezing rubber cut out of a lift insole into the hole. This did not work because it slipped out of place on walking.

    1. Hi DeniseS, they did not work. The red cushioned parts of the e-bay product were cut out, pushed into the gap and glued. Unfortunately they slid out sideways with walking.

  11. I was blaming my partner for treading mud into the house not realising it was rubber flakes from my disintegrating shoes. They have hardly been worm and look like new. Thought i would check the internet for some inspiration before consigning them to the bin. Such a waste of money and leather.

  13. i have had my super spendy boots disintegrate in addition to 4 different pairs of tennis shoes! One of the pairs came completely detached from the sole -while I was in a store far away from my car or any way to fix them!
So weird...I have worn MBTs for almost 20 yrs and this is a new problem. My first pair lasted 3 years of me wearing them 5 days a weeks 10+ hour days. Now I am lucky to get a year out of them. Resorted to buying them used on poshmark because I am disabled and cannot afford them anymore. Unfortunately for me, after almost having my leg amputated and 13 surgeries, these are the only shoes I can wear without my leg hurting so I am in a pickle!
